Our Christian vision means that our pupils experience engaging activities in music that contribute to pupils becoming active learners and engage as active members of the school, local, national and global community.

How do we ‘OPEN THE DOORS OF POSSIBILITY’ TO our children for Music?

Our St John’s music curriculum is designed to provide children in all year groups with high-quality, engaging musical activities. Throughout their musical journey, children enjoy chances to create, play and perform, as well as listen to and learn about a range of styles and genres from various historical periods. The interrelated dimensions of music are integrated progressively within each unit of work, to give maximum opportunity for children’s development of musical concepts. Musical skills are taught explicitly in discrete sessions, whilst also being used in a cross curricular context.

How do we NURTURE these possibilities for Music?

Our St John’s music curriculum is designed in this way because we aim to develop a curriculum that nurtures children’s understanding and love of music, to carry with them for the rest of their lives. We aim to always build on previous learning, always taking into account and reinforcing prior knowledge and understanding, whilst fostering children’s confidence and sense of achievement.

What DO WE MAKE POSSIBLE for our children in Music?

At St John’s children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We aim to provide children with the opportunity to progress to the next level of their creative excellence.
